"…When the sun sets and its light passes one last time through the rooms, crossing the window grilles before the wooden shutters are drawn, the last visitors already gone, it quietly brings into relief the display cases, the patinated furniture, and the everyday objects that have become witnesses to a vanished era. One final glow lingers, illuminating the discreet continuity of a history that has been carefully preserved.
The courtyard, lush with vegetation and enclosed by imposing columns, is the first to sink into the tropical night—always on time. Opposite it, the west-facing façade gathers with quiet gravity the last golden rays of the Kandyan evening sun. Shadows stretch across the red floor of the vast veranda, linger between the legs of antique furniture, climb the white walls, and slowly dissolve. Above the great roof, crows settle into their nocturnal perches. The dogs, stirring from their daytime torpor, resume their watch.
The staff busy themselves bringing the cushions inside, tidying, cleaning, and preparing for the following day before leaving the premises and making way for the night watchman. Always arriving ahead of time, he appears at the gate at half past five in the evening, with a quiet punctuality in which he seems to take pride. His routine alone is a ritual that announces the evening at Suriyakantha.
First, he sets up his camp bed beneath the veranda, then lights the bronze lamp dedicated to the Buddha, placed upon a magnificent Dutch chest burnished by time. He lays down flowers and offerings and begins his prayers. Throughout the night, the coconut-oil flame of the lamp keeps watch over the house, as if protecting it.
Buddhist chants, murmured softly, filter through the corridors and reception rooms, renewing a centuries-old tradition of the island. This is not a performance; it is a continuity, a silent communion with an entire country—at the same hour, each and every day."
